I’m Back! Life, COVID-19 and the Future of Alternatively Speaking

There is no denying that 2020 was quite the year…

From wildfires and lockdowns to social unrest and political turmoil. I don’t think there is anyone out there that isn’t wishing for 2021 to break free from the insanity and bring our lives back to normal once again. I know I am!

If you’re a regular reader here on Alternatively Speaking, then you’ve likely noticed a few things:

  • I disappeared for most of 2020
  • The blog looks COMPLETELY different

When COVID-19 hit, many bloggers were hit hard. Traffic was down, affiliates and advertisers were cutting back on their budgets and brands were limiting their collaborations. In short, many bloggers saw a significant hit to their income. Add this to the fact that we were also trying to navigate the pandemic and everything that surrounded that in our personal lives, and it’s no wonder that many took a step back.

With many of my posts discussing outdoor travel, I was among those that took a significant hit.

As much as I knew that it was a reflection of the current global situation, not my blog, and that it would pass when the world started to open back up again, it was beyond frustrating. Rather than starting to resent this blog by forcing myself to keep writing, I made the decision to take a break and ride it out.

While I did take the time off here on Alternatively Speaking, I didn’t completely step away from the world of blogging. In February 2020 I launched my second blog, a pet-focused blog called Shed Happens.

Throughout 2020, I focused on building this new blog as well as completing courses and reading books relating to SEO and other important skills. I wasn’t done with Alternatively Speaking. However, I knew that I wanted to give this space a bit of an overhaul to focus on the topics that I connected with this brand most – Alternative Lifestyle and Outdoor Travel.

As we move into 2021, you can expect more posts on topics such as:

I want to thank everyone that has supported me here on Alternatively Speaking since its launch in 2017. I wouldn’t be where I am now without all of you.

That being said, if there is ever a topic that you would like to see on the blog, please feel free to drop me a line on my Contact page and let me know!

Here’s to a great 2021!

  1. Hey! Amazing that I started blogging more during the pandemic and that you started a new blog that I love. So funny to find you on this blog too. I am very curious to see more from both your blogs in 2021.

    1. Aww, I’m glad to hear that you love Shed Happens (I love your blog as well). This blog was where my blogging career started. I had a couple of others before this, but never monetized them or took them too seriously. I’m really excited to bring it back with a new refreshed look and focus.

  2. True..Year 2020 had give us so many things to learn..some learning are good and some are emotionally bad. Hope 2021 will be good and free.like your blog πŸ™‚ and yes want to read about tattoos more because thinking to made one in coming future. Thanks πŸ™‚

    1. There will DEFINITELY be more about tattoos coming in the near future!
It’s one of my favourite topics and always a hit on here with my readers – a total win/win

  3. WOW! I love your “new” blog. And great to have you back. Even though you were missing here, it sounds like you were very busy building your other blog and gaining a lot of valuable knowledge that can help you build up both blogs. Happy New Year & All the best with this blog!

    1. Thank you! I am super impressed with how it has taken off, and now that I’m back here, I’m looking forward to what Alternatively Speaking has to bring in 2021 as well πŸ™‚

  4. Ahhh, no wonder I was a little confused when I clicked on the link you left and it brought me here instead of shedhappens! I didn’t realize that you have a main blog on top of your pet blog. Glad to see that you’re returning to this blog this year. I love how ‘clean’ and pleasing on the eye this blog is, too. Wishing you all the best!
