An 'Alternative' spin on the classic 'Lifestyle Blog'

Never Apologize for Taking Care of YOU!

Never Apologize for Taking Care of YOU!

I spent a good part of my day today reading through some of my favourite blogs and leaving comments/spreading love. It’s something I try to do once a week, although I have been slacking a bit as of late… I noticed across many of these blogs there was a pattern in the recent posts. There appears to be a number of bloggers that for various reasons are taking a blogging break, or just coming back from one, and sharing posts to explain their decision.

Now I am all for the openness and vulnerability of sharing the different struggles and challenges in your life, this willingness to create transparency on your blogs is a bit part of why I have come to love all of you so much. You don’t just sugar coat and pretend everything about life is always perfect, instead, you are real and honest – blogging about the good times, sharing the ‘not so good’ and even going as far as to provide some insight into the downright bad times.

Yes, there are times that warrant the word bad, regardless of how you spin them or what silver lining you are desperately searching for!

I have also backed off quite a bit on my blogging these last few weeks for a number of reasons ranging everything from a busier personal schedule to struggling a bit with dealing with my own mental health/stress/etc. It happens… Newsflash: Bloggers are human!

That being said, there is a message I want to share for all of the bloggers that I connect with in this amazing global community that we have here, as well as for anyone who may catch themselves doing this in your day to day lives –  NEVER feel like you need to apologize for taking care of yourself!

So many of the blogs I read today discussed feeling guilty for not posting or being active. They referenced some genuine challenges from mental health to breakups and everything in between. Know that there is NOTHING wrong with making yourself a priority. In fact, I would go as far as to say that you are doing exactly what you should be doing by taking your break!

You want to help others, inspire others, lead others… but how are you going to do all these things if you don’t keep yourself healthy? Have you ever heard the saying you can’t pour from an empty cup? It’s true! Don’t forget it! If you allow your cup to empty, you aren’t going to be able to help anyone in the ways that you would like to.

Whether you feel comfortable sharing your reasons or not – make yourself a priority in your life. If you need a break, take a break! If blogging is what you need to keep you moving right now, blog to your heart’s content! But… Please don’t apologize for taking care of the amazing, beautiful, inspirational, wonderful person that is YOU!

  • Wow this was such a great post!! This post really spoke to me because I just came back from I break myself and a part of me felt guilty for abandoning something I was once so passionate about. I have to remember to tell myself that I shouldn’t feel sorry for taking some me time in order to better myself. You should make more posts like this!

    • Thank you! I am glad you read it if that’s how you were feeling because you definitely shouldn’t feel guilty! Take care of you, and when the time is right you’ll be right back to blogging!

  • Heck yes! Blogging or outside of blogging you should never, ever feel guilty of taking care of yourself above everyone else. I hate it when bloggers feel the need to apologise for taking a break, especially if it’s for personal reasons like NO! GO! YOU DO YOU, IT’S FINE! xxx

    • Exactly! That’s why I just had to say something, because I was seeing WAY too much of it going on…. You should never feel guilty for doing what you need to in order to take care of yourself!

  • I love this post! I recently quit my job because I was overwhelmed with workload/stress and felt it was impacting my mental health. I believe it is important, if something is making you unhappy, to pinpoint exactly what it is and do what you need to do to change it. I believe taking a career break will enable me to come back stronger into a different position within a different company. A bit of a different perspective haha! But definitely agree with you.. we should never feel bad if our instincts are telling us we need to take a break or stop doing something.

    • I actually switched careers recently for that exact reason – the whole industry was making me miserable and it was time to shift into something I would genuinely enjoy doing! I’m glad to hear that you were able to take those steps to take care of yourself! I hope that everything is going well!

  • Brilliant post, and I completely agree, everyone needs time for themselves which is exactly what I have done lately. It’s no point stretching yourself or trying to please everyone else, running around doing too much because it can break you. Everyone needs to take care of themselves and if you need to take time out to do that, then that is what you do, and you must never apologize for that x

  • Hell yes! Thank you so much for writing this. I defiantly needed to hear this. You are amazing 🌸

  • I really loved what you wrote. For the pass year or so I have been taking a break from blogging. This past April I decided to pick it back up, among other things and start fresh. I’m so so glad I did.

  • This post was really interesting thank you! I felt ever so guilty for not blogging for a couple of months because I couldn’t keep up with it alongside my uni work and I felt so bad but then I had to think about it and think about myself and I realised that I had to do what was right for me! xo

    • Exactly! You need to prioritize you and what’s best in your life, and sometimes that may mean walking away for a little bit!
