One of my favourite topics that I regularly discuss here on Alternatively Speaking is anything pet related. This could be due to the fact that my furkids are my world. Really, there is very little that I wouldn’t do for these four nut jobs! We include them in everything and anything that we do, and really Halloween is no different. I have taken some great Halloween pictures with them in the past, always rocking some adorable pet costumes.
There are some amazing pet costumes out there but before I delve into some examples I need to take a moment to talk about safety concerns. First and foremost, there is NO reason to make your pet uncomfortable, anxious or scared regardless of the ‘image’ you are going for. If your pet is not going to be comfortable in the costume you have selected, it’s not worth it. End of story. There are a number of different costumes I would put on Dav but never consider for Indy simply because I know my pets and what they are comfortable with. Pay attention to the signs they are giving you!
If you have a high anxiety dog, there are some super simple and minimalist costumes, or simply rock a cute Halloween bandana. Regardless of what you select, always watch for signs of stress such as excessive panting, lagging behind, refusing to move at all or biting at the costume. If you notice your pet is having a hard time, take it off!
If you are making your costume or adapting a children’s costume for your pet, pay attention to any possible safety concerns. Check to make sure that the costume isn’t too tight cutting off circulation, or too loose allowing your pet to be tangled up. Pay attention o strings, belts, capes, buttons and other parts of the costume that may be a choking risk.
Most importantly NEVER leave your pet alone in a costume. Keep them with you where you can keep an eye on them at all times ensuring that they are safe and happy.

Halloween Costume Ideas for Your Pup
If you have a golden coloured dog, such as a golden lab or a golden retriever, this costume couldn’t be easier! Just pick up the lion mane and you’re good to go. This is a particularly great costume to choose if you and your family are going as the other members of the Wizard of Oz. Bust out those ruby red shoes!
When looking at the different Halloween costumes out there for the pups this one has always been one of my favourites. I think it all stems back to a video that circulated Facebook where a dog in a spider costume was running around scaring everyone that he/she came across. I just pictured one of our pups doing the same thing…
I’m sure that there are many of us that believe that our dog is super pup for one reason or another. This costume gives you the opportunity to share your dog’s hidden identity with the world for just one night!
Is your four-legged friend a little troublemaker? If so, this might just be the perfect costume! While you aren’t really sending your pup off to puppy jail, you can at least let the costume speak for itself, warning everyone else!
When I was going through ideas for puppy costumes and I saw this one I was completely ready to pull out my credit card then and there on the spot. I love the simplicity of the costume, meaning that there isn’t a lot that may bother your pup, and the skeleton look is a fun, traditional costume idea.
Another great example of a traditional Halloween costume, this cute little witch costume will definitely look adorable on dogs of any size. While the one I picked here is relatively simple, there are also a number of different coloured or ‘prettied up’ varieties.
Dress your pup as this iconic superhero and you are sure to turn heads wherever you go. Whether you are trick or treating with your kids, attending a pet-friendly party or simply dressing up for those perfect Halloween themed family photos – this costume is an adorable option!
I couldn’t include Bat Dog and leave Robin off the list. I love these two costumes because I feel as though they would be the PERFECT set for my two pups on picture day, giving us a cute ‘couples costume’ for the two. In fact, I think I may just order these ones for next year…
Halloween Costume Ideas for Your Cat
If the pups can sport an adorable lion mane, then I think the cats should get to as well! Afterall, they actually are members of the cat family… How adorable does this cat look?
If you are just looking to get pictures of your cat in costume (which, in my opinion, it is more likely, given that I don’t see a lot of people running around the night of Halloween trick or treating with their cat) then these costumes that focus on the front of the cat can be a lot of fun. There are some adorable options.
This cat costume is a little more intense than the others in that it is going to completely cover a good part of your cat’s body. While a lot of cats aren’t going to go for this (including my own) I know that there are some that would rock it and look ADORABLE!
On the other end of the spectrum, this costume is a little more minimalist but it is so cute! I am seriously debating picking this one up for Pippen – how adorable would that Halloween photo be???
This pumpkin photo is a fun way to include your cat in your Halloween celebrations. The bright orange would stand out beautifully on the fur of almost every cat, especially those with darker coats.
I can’t share all these at costumes without sharing the most traditional of those associated with cats. Nearly every with is pictured, at one time or another, with her cat by her side so why not let your cat be a witch for a day?
Another costume that is perfect for a photo session, this one is just far too adorable not to include. I love the incredible amount of detail that has been put into this costume.
Ok, to round off the selection of Halloween costumes I just HAD TO include this one hahaha! I know that anything referring to this man is seen as controversial at best, but I found this costume to be absolutely HILARIOUS!
Have you ever dressed your pet up for Halloween? If so, what did you dress them as? Did they HATE being dressed up, or did they rock that look?
